Jan 14, 2020 · If you want to understand exactly why that is, be sure to check out our in-depth article on SSD wear & tear. The short explanation is that SSD memory cells degrade every time you erase data and write new information to them. Modern SSDs can take a lot of punishment when it comes to repeated disk writes. I recently bought some Intel DC S3500 SSD's, which really turned out to be "HP 240GB Value End ENT VK0240GDJXU" drives (an hp-branded oem version of the Intel DC S3500). I'm using them on a Linux server and I've noticed via smartctl that the usual Intel "media wearout indicator" attribute isn't present.

Jul 05, 2017 · A solid-state drive, or “SSD”, is much faster than a traditional hard disk drive (or “HDD”). SSDs have been around for awhile, but a new breed of SSD, called PCIe SSDs, are slowly starting to rise.
While solid-state drives (SSDs) are often similar to mechanical Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) in physical dimensions (e.g. height, width and length) and After an SSD is assembled, the SSD manufacturer can reserve an additional percentage of the total drive capacity for Over-Provisioning (OP) during...
Mar 27, 2020 · Instead of writing to a location on a physical disc, an SSD writes the data to a block. Each write process causes the memory to degrade, or "wear." While the SSD uses a file system to communicate data storage locations to the host system, it also re-shuffles the data to ensure even wear across all memory blocks.
Feb 01, 2018 · With NAND prices staying steady consumers can readily save a few bucks (or quid) by sticking to SATA based SSDs, yet still enjoy most of the benefits flash based drives have to offer. As I noted in a review of the drive-diagnostic software DriveDx, smaller-capacity SSDs used intensively wear faster than larger ones because they have fewer cells over which to average writes. That...
Re: Found on Slashdot: Wear Leveling, RAID Can Wipe Out SSD Advantage -- Hi, David: Given the high-speed of SSD and assuming that since there are no "moving parts" to break or wear out, I would suppose that SSD should be far more reliable than most spinning disks.
Which also means that an SSD's wear leveling algorithm will write new data to a smaller and smaller area of the flash memory, wearing the drive out faster, unless some background process regularly runs TRIM to erase released flash memory, or the memory is erased immediately before a write.
You can buy 12G of RAM for something like $80. That would be the same dollar amount as a SSD and granted the SSD is larger, but, it eats an SATA port, adds heat, takes more power than RAM. If you have enough RAM, you normally won't be swapping so much to the virtual memory. Most of the SSD wouldn't be used anyway.
